“I cheated on my art history test, I cheated on like, so many math tests.” This was Charissa Thompson during an interview about a year before her most recent admission.

Charissa Thompson

In the category of “You must be joking,” Thompson, now a host of Amazon’s Thursday Night Football broadcast, was previously a sideline reporter for Fox Sports and covered the NFL. Here is what she volunteered last year:

"I’ve said this before, so I haven’t been fired for saying it, but I’ll say it again," Thompson said. "I would make up the report sometimes because the coach wouldn’t come out at halftime or it was too late and I was like, I didn’t want to screw up the report, so I was like, 'I’m just gonna make this up.'"

The reaction from the industry was not one of approval (thank goodness), but of swift condemnation:

"A good portion of the public doesn’t trust the media as it is," The Athletic reporter Chris Kirschner said. "I cannot believe she would proudly admit this. This causes significant harm to the people who actually take the job seriously. It’s entirely unethical and worthy of never working in the field again."

A quick personal story about lying: I recently sold a car to CarMax. I filled out the online forms, including mileage, accessories, and condition of the car. CarMax quoted me $12,000 instantly. When I brought the car to the CarMax location, I waited in dread for the inspection to end and the inevitable price reduction to be slapped on me.

Finally, the manager of the location asked to speak with me to finalize the deal. She said what I expected, “There will be an adjustment to the offer for your car.” Of course I thought, here it comes. “We are raising our offer to $13,000.” How could this be? Am I secretly being filmed? Dumb as I was, I asked why there was a price change. Her reply was, “You didn’t lie about your mileage. Everybody lies about their mileage.”

Key Takeaway

If you catch somebody lying, don’t assume its the only time they did so.

Things I think about

Email is one of the greatest communication tools ever. Its up there with the invention of the telephone. Email is also one of the greatest creators personal liability ever. I hate thinking about what each email I send would like like in the hands of an opposing attorney.
